The legend of Tepoztécatl. Traditional Mexican legend

Tepoztécatl was born of a princess whose pregnancy was the product of the love of a small bird. The little one, was named by his mother as Tepoztécatl. She was immensely happy with her child, however, when the princess's parents found out about that baby, they were very upset with her because she was not married, so they forced her to leave the child away from home .

When leaving, the princess left him near an anthill, that's when the little ants fed him with drops of honey they got from a honeycomb. Shortly after feeding, the ants left the baby near a maguey. When he had it in his pencas, the maguey sheltered him and fed with the mead that he had inside. Later, the maguey placed it in a box and placed it on the waters of the Atongo River, until an elderly couple who lived in Tepoztlán found it and raised it as if it were their son.

The little Tepoztécatl grew up to become a strong and skillful warrior. One day an evil serpent named Mazacoatl appeared by Xochicalco threatening the inhabitants of that town. The adoptive father of Tepoztécatl was chosen to put an end to that dreadful creature, but the man was very old and tired, so Tepoztécatl decided to take his place and fight the snake. For this the young man took many pieces of obsidian and when fighting against the creature cut his insides with crystals, ending his life. When he returned to his village Tepoztécatl became his hero, all celebrated his victory and named himLord of Tepoztlán

and priest of the God Ometochtli. Years later Tepoztécatl disappeared and he went to live forever at the pyramid that is at the top of the hill of Tepozteco.
