Many women suffer from diastasis after childbirth. This is the separation of the abdominal muscles. During pregnancy, it happens to 100% of women, due to the weight exerted on these muscles by the belly.
As the abdomen grows a lot, the central line, "linea alba", expands and diastasis occurs. This separation causes an increase in the volume of the abdomen, umbilical hernias, back discomfort and weakness of the pelvic floor as incontinence as well as digestive problems. It will depend on the volume taken and the harmful exercises we have carried out, the one with more or less diastasis after delivery. We explain how to know if you have diastasis after delivery.
How to know if I have diastasis after childbirth
The simplest way to know if we suffer from diastasis is the following test:
- Lying on your back with your knees bent and feet on the floor, place your hand flat on the navel and lift slightly head. If there is a space and the fingers sink indicates that we have a break of the linea alba and therefore DRA (diastasis).
It is quite usual to confuse the diastasis with overweight, often it seems that it is still pregnant for 3 months, however, this confusion can be very dangerous because to combat it is common to do abdominal exercises that worsen the diastasis. Well, traditional abdominal muscles are very harmful. How to treat diastasis after childbirth
Once diagnosed the diastasis and the degree of separation of the muscles, there are different programs to deal with this injury (common in pregnant women) whose objectives is to increase strength in the abdomen area and lumbar or improve the pelvic floor. However,
we must be very careful with exercises such as Pilates or Yoga because they can be harmful if they are not performed in the correct way. Although for many years to cure the diastasis there was only operation, now there is a non-invasive treatment as an alternative to going through the operating room.
It is a system based on exercises with a physiotherapist. The treatment is composed of the assessment of diastasis, exercises to recover the muscles, correction of daily movements to avoid damaging the abdomen and a special girdle. The results are visible from the few weeks and if the instructions are followed, most note a huge improvement after 21 days. The hypopressive abdominals are also very used for the recovery of the delivery but they are not so effective against the diastasis. How to prevent diastasis during pregnancy
