Educational stories for children: The lion and the worm

There was once a lion and a worm that got along very badly. The lion always stretched proud talking about his strength and he kept repeating that he was the king of the jungle. The worm was tired of his swagger and to make him see that not everything was physical bulk, one day he made a bet.

- I propose to make a race of three obstacles, each one we can bring two friends to help us overcome them. Whoever reaches the goal before will be the winner.

The lion, with a strong skeleton, immediately accepted the sure proposal of his superiority and had no rival.

The next morning he came with a large elephant and a vulture. For its part, the worm arrived accompanied by a butterfly and a small crab. A giraffe would be responsible for preparing the race and monitor the entire route so that they do not cheat and also compete with the watchful eye of all other animals.

A few meters from the exit they found the first obstacle. They had to cross a shallow river. The lion and his friends did it easily leaving their rivals behind and then horses, zebras, cows, chickens and snakes began to clap and cheer their vertebrate friends.

While the butterfly flew across to the other shore, the worm climbed into the carapace of the crab and crossed the river swimming, and although they took a long time, they were able to get there without problems, so earthworms, ants, spiders, grasshoppers and crickets encouraged their invertebrate friends.

The lion was already before the second obstacle. This time they had to jump a great ravine five meters wide on the sea. While the vulture flew to the other side with ease, his friends taking a run gave a great leap and although the elephant slipped and, almost fell into the water, all managed to get safe and sound on the other side, so, hippos, dogs , mice, rhinoceroses and fish happily celebrated the good fortune of their vertebrate friends.

This time the worm climbed on top of the butterfly and crossed the ravine over the sea; Then the butterfly came back for the crab, repeating the trip. Jellyfish, stars, squids and octopi celebrated from the water the arrival of their invertebrate friends on the other side of the ravine.

By then the lion and his friends were thinking how to overcome the last obstacle. This time they had to enter a cave with a very narrow entrance and due to their size and strong skeleton they did not know how to do it. The elephant with its trunk and the vulture sticking its beak tried again and again, but despite their efforts and the voices of gazelles, tigers, ducks and monkeys, they did not succeed. They were still trying when hours later, the worm and its friends arrived. This time it was they who entered easily. As they did not have a skeleton and they were little they overcame the obstacle without problems.

All the other animals of the jungle got along very well, that is why, vertebrates and invertebrates celebrated with joy the success of the worm and, the lion, learned the lesson by ceasing to boast and becoming more humble.

Since then they lived even happier by accepting each other, as they had always done, regardless of their physical appearance.
