Why names are given to hurricanes

Surely, you've ever wondered why names of people, men and women are put to hurricanes, cyclones or tropical storms. Meteorologists began to name hurricanes to facilitate communication between them and the general public. Before, for centuries, they were baptized with the holy name of the day that affected the area, as an example, that of Santa Ana and San Felipe (Puerto Rico).

Each year, a list of names is prepared for the next hurricane season. The list contains a name for each letter of the alphabet (the letters Q, U, X, Y, Z are not included because few names begin with those letters). These lists are repeated every six years, and the names are changed when the name of a hurricane has been removed.

The names of very destructive hurricanes are removed, remaining in the historical records, and are replaced by others that start with the same letter.
