There is always talk of the health dangers of lack of sleep, but few know that numerous studies show the dangers of their excess.

Even so, we do not all need the same hours of sleep, but rather as a function of age; A newborn should not sleep the same hours as a teenager.

How much should the children sleep?

Some studies support that as we grow the number of hours in bed should decrease:

- babies from 0 to 3 months should have 14 to 17 hours of sleep;- from 4 to 11 months from 12 to 15 hours

- from 1 to 2 years from 11 to 14 hours

- from 3 to 5 years from 10 to 13 hours

- from 6 to 13 years from 9 to 11 hours

- from 14 to 17 years from 8 to 10 hours

- from 18 to 65 from 7 to 9 hours;

- from 65 from 7 to 8 hours.

Therefore, those hours of sleep more can be harmful to our body than regenerating, but it also depends on the daily activity that is performed and whether we are sick or not. In addition, a factor to be taken into account is that this number of hours to spare may be hiding another type of pathology that we do not know, which should be consulted by the doctor. Although the studies that have been done have been mostly with adults we could suppose that this can be extrapolated also to children.

Risks of sleeping too many hours

1

- Increased fatigue:It has been proven that children who sleep too much tend to be more tired during the day as well as being more sedentary than others, which also entails an increase in body weight. 2-

Low level of concentration and attention in the studies : Whether you sleep too little or too much, the level of concentration decreases as the brain goes into a state of lethargy that is difficult to wake up in addition to drowsiness during the day.3-

Headaches: It is quite usual when one has fallen asleep a lot with a headache. Although the cause is still unknown, one theory relates it to the fluctuating levels of neurotransmitters. 4-

Back pain : A bad position in the bed means that we can have too much muscle tension and overload in some muscles of the back.5-

Depression : A couple of years ago, an investigation was conducted that revealed that people who sleep more than 9 hours a day are twice as likely to suffer depression as those who sleep less.6-

Risk of diabetes . A Canadian study showed that lack of sleep affects insulin; a similar impact happens to the contrary. It was found that people who sleep more than 8 hours at night are 50% more likely to develop this disease.7-

Memory loss and decreased brain function: A report in which many women were studied for more than 14 years, found that those who slept in excess had a brain aging greater than the rest. In addition, a more rapid deterioration of cognitive functions was observed, which in the long run may trigger an increased risk of dementia in maturity and suffering from degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
