Birth, whenever it is natural or vaginal, can be lived with anesthesia to alleviate the pains of dilation and the expulsive, or without it. Still in some parts of the world is not an option offered to the mother, although it is increasingly widespread. In the event that the delivery is made by caesarean section, epidural or general anesthesia will always be used, depending on the case.

Many women prefer to control pain with the breathing techniques that are learned in childbirth preparation courses, however, others choose anesthesia. It is important to know the advantages and disadvantages of both methods well before choosing.

What types of anesthesia are used in deliveries?

The anesthetists usually use three different types of anesthesia para to help pregnant women to live the birth, avoiding to a greater or lesser extent, the pain caused by the contractions, dilation and the descent of the baby through the birth canal: 1 -

Local : it is applied in the perineal area and is used in case an episiotomy has been performed and the woman has not undergone epidural anesthesia or if she has suffered a tear. This drug does not prevent the pain of contractions, as it is a very localized anesthesia and only prevents discomfort at the time of suturing the cut.2 -

Epidural anesthesia: According to the clinical center or the option of the mother, the epidural or epidural walking can be administered: - Epidural walking: it is also known as ambulatory anesthesia. It is administered in a similar way to the epidural, injecting the anesthetic into the lumbar vertebrae. However, due to the combination of the drug, the lower part of the body of the woman does not sleep, who can walk and move freely but does not feel the pains of the contractions although she does notice them. This technique allows the pregnant woman to have more autonomy and be more aware of the demands she has to make.

- Epidural: administered by injecting it into the lumbar vertebrae and sleeping the body of the pregnant woman completely from the waist down. The woman has to lie on a stretcher for the duration of the labor and does not feel any pain during the process.

3 -

General : sleeps the patient completely. It is usually applied in some deliveries by caesarean section and only when the doctors consider that it is not possible to perform the intervention with epidural anesthesia.
