One of the most frequent back injuries in childhood is scoliosis that is known in medical terms as idiopathic scoliosis. It involves the formation of abnormal curvatures in the back.

It is appreciated, in addition to an x-ray when the child is seen from behind. The column without scoliosis makes a vertical, the one that does have a curvature to the right or to the left (in the form of C). However, generally both curvatures (in the form of S) are given: one main up and one secondary compensatory to the opposite side. The scoliosis causes other collateral damage and is that the shoulder, shoulder blade or hip are higher on one side than on the other.

Why scoliosis occurs in children

It is called idiopathic because the cause of this disorder is unknown in most cases, although some studies suggest that there is a genetic component in its appearance. And is that this injury of the back occurs in some families much more than in others.

Symptoms of scoliosis in childhood

In many cases, it does not cause back pain, respiratory problems or any other dysfunction, which is why it is usually seen in medical consultations or periodic check-ups of the child or, if it is very evident, parents perceive the deviation in the back of their children.

To appreciate this deviation in the back, the child has to undress from the waist up and lean forward, this test is known as "front tilt Adam". It also lets you know if there are some members with different length or other problems. It will be an X-ray that confirms this deviation and the degree of deviation from it.

Treatment for scoliosis in children

What can be done? The measures are always focused on the preventive plan. Ergonomics, postural hygiene and muscular development when more and better is done prevents the pathologies in the back.

In case the back is already deviated it is important to follow the medical indications since otherwise there may be a progressive deterioration of the curve leading to problems such as reduced lung capacity.

When the curve is less than 20º, the doctor will check that it does not progressively get worse and indicate postural measures and a sport, such as swimming, that strengthens the back.

If the curvature is greater, it may be necessary to use a corset or perform surgery.
