The education of children should not forget the importance of developing their social skills. It is essential that children learn to behave assertively, that is, they are able to defend their opinions and ideas and show their criticism without causing harm to others.

Educating children in assertiveness will allow them to develop good self-esteem and maintain good social relationships, avoiding passive or aggressive attitudes.

How to educate children in assertiveness

Assertiveness techniques must be learned, for this reason parents are the first to teach their children to be assertive. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain offers parents basic principles for children to learn to be assertive.

First of all, the environment in which the child's social skills are developed should be addressed. In this environment the self-esteem of the child must be encouraged, it must feel loved and supported. For this, the people closest to him, such as parents and teachers, should reinforce positive attitudes and become role models.

Attitudes to educate in assertiveness in childhood

According to the Ministry's recommendations, certain attitudes towards children must be taken.

1. First of all care must be taken with the projections, that is, we must avoid projecting our own fears on our children and letting them have their ideas and experiences. The adult will be limited to transmit their opinions and give advice telling their experiences but without establishing rules.

2. A point error should not be confused with a characteristic of a person's personality. For this reason we must be careful with the messages that are transmitted to children.

3. Lastly, parents should have expectations regarding their children according to their age, since each level of education corresponds to a different behavior and problems can develop if attitudes are required for those who are not prepared .
