Children can have hearing or hearing loss due to several causes: babies can have a deafness due to an infection of the mother during pregnancy, a problem in childbirth or an injury in the childhood.

Another common cause in childhood for which children lose hearing is otitis or even ear plugging. In Guiainfantil.com we have consulted Dr. Gracia Aránguez about this disorder.

When the child has a plug in his ear

TheDoctor Gracia Aránguez, D.R.L. is a member of the Expert Committee of the Early Detection of Hearing Loss in newborns of the Community of Madrid. Coordinates the cochlear implant program of the General University Hospital Gregorio Marañón. Here he talks about covered ears in babies and children.

1. When is it said that the baby has a blocked ear?

The ear can be covered by two important reasons, because the baby has wax in the ear and the external auditory canal is blocked or because the ear is occupied by mucus. The feeling is like when we climb a port and our hearing is closed.

2. What signals does the baby have with a covered ear?

If it is covered on the outside we can see that it has wax retained in the duct, but if the reason is because it has mucus in the ear the baby will not complain of pain unless it is infected and we will only notice that it has a lower reaction to the sound stimulus.

3. What can parents do in front of a child's covered ear?

If we have ruled out having a wax stopper, or if it has a wax stopper and little by little it has dissolving, we do not have to be very worried either. What we should do if we suspect that it has serous otitis is to try to drain the ear in a natural way, that is, we will have to facilitate the functioning of the tube, for which it is very important that the nostrils are permeable.

We would have to wash the nose with serum, give it a little more liquid and more fluid and we would not have to put it to bed immediately after dinner, but we should wait an hour so that those refluxes that almost all babies have are less frequent.

If we lift the crib a little when it is a baby or when it is a very small child we will facilitate that there is not so much reflux and we will avoid that irritation of the tube that often is the origin of the covered ear.
