The natural abortion usually occurs between weeks 6 and 8 of pregnancy and its most evident symptom is vaginal bleeding. It usually happens because of some chromosomal abnormality in the fetus.

Folic acid

An essential vitamin during pregnancy, responsible to a large extent for the growth of the fetus cells and the production of DNA. It is also known as vitamin B9, and is involved in the production of tissues and organs of the baby. The adequate consumption of folic acid before pregnancy and during pregnancy reduces the risk of premature birth, neuronal, spinal or baby lip defects. Its deficit during pregnancy can produce spina bifida, cleft lip or anencephaly.

Delivery

Birth is called the final stage of delivery, when finally, after helping the baby to be born, the placenta is expelled. This usually occurs minutes after the expulsive. The placenta is the organ responsible for feeding and protecting the baby during the nine months of pregnancy. Responsible for providing all the necessary nutrients and keep the fetus away from bacteria and germs.

Amniocentesis

Prenatal test that involves the removal of a small sample of amniotic fluid. It is usually done around week 20 of pregnancy. Its purpose is to detect possible congenital defects or abnormalities in the baby, such as Down syndrome, neurological or metabolic diseases. The sample of amniotic fluid is removed by inserting a very thin needle into the uterus through the abdomen. The reliability of the results is more than 99%.

Amnioscopy

A test performed in the last weeks of pregnancy, when the fetus already has its head embedded in the mother's pelvis. It consists in introducing a hollow tube through the vagina to observe the state of the amniotic fluid. If the fluid is not transparent, but yellow, brown or green, it can be indicative of the presence of meconium, and poses a risk to the baby. The gynecologist must decide whether or not to induce labor.

Epidural anesthesia

Anesthesia applied only in the lower part of the body, from the waist down, in order to mitigate the pain of contractions and the expulsion of labor. It is applied by a specialized anesthetist through a lumbar puncture. To do this, use a very long and thick needle that infiltrates an area of the spine. In the open space, a catheter is inserted to administer and control the anesthesia throughout the delivery.

Anxiety

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause anxiety in the pregnant woman. It is that fear, stress and nervousness that affects the mother-to-be especially when the delivery date approaches. Moderate physical activity and relaxation exercises help fight anxiety during pregnancy.

Cravings

They are known colloquially as cravings, and are nothing other than whims of the pregnant woman for a specific food or 'need for urgent satisfaction' of the pregnant woman before a lack related to a food. It can be for a taste, or a mixture of foods. The craving is due either to the hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy or to the need to supply a nutritional deficiency.

Heartburn

It is one of the most typical discomforts of pregnant women during pregnancy. It occurs especially in the last weeks, at the end of pregnancy. It is nothing other than the sensation of feeling the gastric juices in the esophagus constantly. It is produced by the displacement of the stomach up due to the growth of the uterus.

Areola

The areola is the dark part of the breast that surrounds the nipple. During pregnancy, the areola enlarges and darkens even more. Midwives call it 'second areola'. The goal of this change is to call the attention of the newborn to encourage breastfeeding as soon as the baby is born.

Nesting

It is the implantation or fixation of the embryo to the endometrium, that soft layer that covers the uterus inside. The ovum, already fertilized, reaches the uterus approximately four days after the sperm was able to fertilize the egg. Two days after arrival in the uterus, the 'shell' of the ovum breaks and the embryo sticks to the endometrium.
