What dad / mom does not remember the stage in which your child was wearing diapers? That first stage, its first months, full of uncertainties, progress, illusions, and also, why not say it, lack of sleep.

However, at this stage, diapers also carry a number of problems. Among them, the constant chafing and the so-called 'diaper rash'.

Types of diapers for the baby

The first dilemma that parents have to ask themselves is what kind of diaper they have to buy for their children. In principle, almost 100% of parents turn to disposable diapers, whose technology has evolved greatly in recent decades, as it is increasingly made with more breathable materials and with greater absorption capacity.

Faced with these, a small percentage of the population uses non-disposable diapers, arguing that with them it is easier to perceive or realize the evacuation / urination of the baby, which would reduce the contact time of the skin with urine or the feces, and this would minimize the frequency of possible irritations and the incidence of diaper rash. This fact is not scientifically proven. Another false myth related to the diaper is that its use reduces fertility in men, because it induces an increase in temperature in the scrotal area. Nor is this fact proven.

Causes, prevention and treatment of diaper dermatitis

Diaper dermatitis is an inflammatory lesion of the inguinal-genital region, motivated by a host of factors: El - The type of skin of the baby.

- The humidity.

- The irritating effect of the urine / faeces that remains for a long time, the maceration of the same, etc.

From a clinical point of view, the baby will be irritable, upset, restless. From a practical point of view, to prevent dermatitis:

- Change the baby's diaper frequently.

- Do not tighten the adhesive too much.

- Do not use wipes with alcoholic perfumes.

If reddened or irritated areas appear, a water-based paste or a cream with zinc oxide may be used. Also, in this case, it is recommended to leave as much time as possible to the baby without a diaper, which is not as easy as you might think. Occasionally, it is necessary to resort to the use of corticosteroid creams, alone or in combination with antibiotics / antifungals, always under the prescription of your pediatrician.
