Visits to the gynecologist during pregnancy

The monitoring of pregnancy and the frequency of visits varies in different countries and in different types of health: public and private. In the public health system, basic routine checks are carried out, while visits and tests are more frequent in private hospitals. In general, the fundamental tests are common in all cases:

- First trimester of pregnancy: the first visit is usually made from week 7 of pregnancy and it is not advisable to wait beyond week 12. In this visit, first visit performs an analysis to confirm pregnancy.

Once confirmed, clinical analyzes will be carried out, such as triple screening to assess the state of health of the mother and the baby, since they can detect chromosomal abnormalities in the baby.

A clinical history of the mother will also be done if it has not been done before, the pregnant woman will be weighed, the probable date of delivery will be determined based on the date of the last rule and will be scheduled to perform an ultrasound in the week 12. It has to be in this week since it is the moment in which the nuchal fold can be measured and assess a possible case of Down syndrome.

- Second trimester of pregnancy: clinical tests will be carried out again to check if the pregnant woman is in good health or needs a supplement. It is common for the pregnant woman to be low in iron and to have a little anemia.

The ultrasound of week 20 is fundamental, in it you can determine not only the sex of the baby but also if he has any malformation.

The gynecologist will assess if the weight of the pregnant woman is correct and will make the appropriate lifestyle recommendations such as walking every day or doing moderate physical exercise, avoiding alcohol and tobacco and eating a healthy diet.

- Third trimester of pregnancy: at the beginning of the same, along with the appropriate tests, the glucose test or O'Sullivan test will be performed, which will detect if the pregnant woman may suffer gestational diabetes. Ultrasounds will also be done to assess the baby's condition and if it has already been placed on the stomach.

The gynecologist will recommend participating in the childbirth preparation courses and the vagino-rectal swab test will be done to check if there are no bacteria present in some women that could cause illness to the baby.

When the probable date of delivery approaches, the mother will be called to perform the monitor test and check the baby's condition and if contractions already exist.

Gynecologists recommend having all the tests and tests carried out during pregnancy together and in a folder so that when the delivery is triggered and the mother arrives at the hospital, the clinical staff can have all the necessary information.
