It is said that every pregnant woman has to fall at least once during the nine months of pregnancy. For this time the popular wisdom may be somewhat right, since it is relatively common for women to suffer an accident during pregnancy.

The causes are logical: on the one hand the increase of the abdomen changes the center of gravity of the woman, making it more unstable. Pregnant women are often more clumsy, less agile because of the increase in body weight. In addition relaxin, hormone necessary for the pelvis to increase its diameter during labor, impregnates all joints making them more lax, and as a result the sprained ankles is very frequent (and as a result falls).

The importance of bruising during pregnancy

The bumps and falls during pregnancy deserve double attention, as they will affect the mother and may also affect the baby. Fortunately, most of the time they do not have special importance, they are usually mild without entailing any danger for the mother or her son. They are limited to bruises, sprains ...

By trimesters, the first is one in which the fetus is more protected by the amniotic fluid and the smaller being, the blows barely affect it. Inside the bag and the uterus is as if it carried an airbag.

It is in the third trimester when the greatest number of falls and blows occur in the pregnant woman, and it is when there is greater risk for the baby because the larger is more exposed to what happens around them.

What to do in the event of a fall, blow or accident of the pregnant woman

As we have said before, most accidents are minor. The welfare of the baby will be compromised depending on the part of the body that is hit by the mother, that is if there is an impact on the mother's abdomen it is more serious.

If the mother is well and we notice that the baby moves, we can almost certainly say that there is no danger to either of us. However, it is worth going to the gynecologist to confirm the welfare of the mother and baby (ultrasound, monitoring ...).

We must go urgently if after a punch we notice discharge of amniotic fluid, vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain and abdominal contraction that does not give way (uterine hypertonia), absence of fetal movements.

How the pregnant woman can prevent falls

- Exercise regularly, to keep us agile during pregnancy.

- Avoid using too high heels or flat shoes.

- Use a seat belt when you drive, and if you look very upset you can use a special adapter for pregnant women.

- Make several meals a day, and bring something to eat in your bag. This will avoid voltage and sugar drops.
