The first solid foods of the baby

Once the time has come to wean the baby, experts from the National Institute of Pediatrics of Mexico (INP) recommend evaluating the state of development and nutrition that the baby has according to their sex and age, to know your nutritional needs. In addition, remember that breastfeeding or replacement milk should be maintained.

The INP advises that the new diet cover the nutritional and energy needs of the baby, and that it includes products of natural origin, fresh and of habitual consumption in the community in which the family resides.

It is very important to bear in mind that in this period the so-called food allergies may appear, so it is recommended when introducing a new food that is made by itself and observe the baby's tolerance.

Quantity, consistency and frequency of food

According to INP specialists, the quantity, consistency and frequency of complementary foods are three fundamental aspects when introducing a new diet in children.

The initial quantity of the products should be between one and two small spoons for fruits, vegetables and cereals in the sixth and seventh months and for meat and fish the ninth and tenth. These quantities will increase gradually and already in the twelfth month a quarter of a cup a day of cereals fruits and vegetables and four tablespoons of meat, fish, legumes and eggs is recommended.

Regarding the frequency, from the sixth to the eighth month the experts advise to give the food once or twice a day and preferably in the morning to encourage breakfast. From the eighth month, meat and fish are introduced and food is also being encouraged. In addition, it is advisable to maintain the consistency of purées and porridges until 12 months, when they begin to introduce chopped or chopped foods.
