Although you may not believe it, it is possible to put out a candle without blowing or touching it, you know how? In this science experiment we teach you how to achieve it. A fun and surprising experiment for children to have fun learning.

For children to discover the secrets of science, we invite you to try this original home experiment, you can follow it step by step or watch it on video. The trick? A chemical reaction that will make the candles go out as if by magic!

Materials

  • 4 small candles
  • 1 lighter or matches
  • 1 jar
  • Vinegar
  • Sodium bicarbonate
Tip: Use a large jar as the chemical reaction will increase the volume.

Experiment: How to extinguish candles from a distance

1. Place the candles on the table and light them.

2. Put a tablespoon of baking soda in a jar and add a splash of vinegar, you will see how it reacts.

3. Tilt the jug a little and close it to the candles, they will go out!

When mixing vinegar and bicarbonate, a chemical reaction is generated that releases carbon dioxide (CO2). This gas is what we use to extinguish the candles.
