The legend of the magic tree, a Latin American story for children

Legend has it that on a small island called Cancaguy there lived happy and friendly people who worked in agriculture and fishing. But a time of drought came and its reservoirs dried up.

The people of Cancaguy were sad, because they only had salt water from the sea. How would they water their plants? How would they drink?

One hot day, Babur, prince of Cancaguy went out with his little sister, Alim, in search of a new water well. They traveled a great road, and when they were about to turn around, they discovered a cliff that they did not know. There, in the middle, the door of a grotto. Alim, who was very curious, convinced her brother to enter the grotto.

They soon discovered a light that indicated the end of the passageway. When leaving, they could not believe what they saw: before their eyes, and on a small beach, there was a beautiful tree. A huge tree, with strong roots that were seen at ground level surrounded by beautiful flowers. Around it, a small lake where several animals drank.

Babur and his sister had never seen anything like this before. A tree so huge on the beach, surrounded by flowers and water ... When they approached, the tree began to speak. It gave them a big scare. No - Do not fear- said the big tree-

My name is Ger, and I am a gorgoé, a magical tree of the oceans. My mission is to desalinate the sea water. My leaves fall into the sea water that surrounds me and absorb the salt. Then the water drags them to the shore, where they are transformed into flowers. You can drink, come on, taste the water. The magic tree of the oceans was right. The water was sweet! The children ran to give the good news to Bisar, the king of the village. At first nobody wanted to believe them, but the children insisted. And they were so excited, that they followed them to the magic tree. And they discovered that everything was true. They could not be happier.

The inhabitants

of Cancaguy treated the tree as best they could. In return, the tree gave them water to drink and water. But the story of the magic tree soon crossed borders. The terrible Tartor, an ambitious king who had desolated his own kingdom, went there in search of the tree. He ripped it off and took it to the ship. But then he received his punishment: suddenly a terrible storm broke loose in two to the ship. The tree sank with all the crew. And since the inhabitants of Cancaguy were very good and noble, they received their reward. There where Ger was before, another identical tree was born.

They soon returned to fresh water and never again suffered from problems of drought .
