Maternal malnutrition, both before conception and during pregnancy, is associated with an increased risk for the mother and the baby. Specialists have determined that those women with a body mass index less than 18.5 are more likely to have a premature birth or a low birth weight baby.

There are certain factors that have been associated with an insufficient gain of gestational weight, such as poverty, teenage pregnancy, abuse, restrictive diets or eating disorders, among others.

Calories to be consumed by a pregnant woman with low weight

Weight gain during pregnancy should be defined specifically for each woman, taking into account the pre-gestational weight. In the case of low birth weight, it is recommended to increase by 150 calories per day for the first trimester of pregnancy, 300 calories per day for the second and 500 calories per day in the third trimester.
