When our children get older, it is important that we inculcate habits. Not only at the level of behavior, food or hygiene; If not, it is also very important to teach them how to perform proper nasal hygiene when they are congested.

We, as adults, will be by your side to help you with the task, but teaching them to do it in the right way will prevent colds and allergies from getting complicated; harming the child and also the adult.

Below we describe some Physiotherapy Techniques to relieve nasal congestion in children.

How to relieve nasal congestion in children

1. Retrograde Rhinopharyngeal Drainage:It helps us clean the posterior nasal area. We stand up, with our heads slightly tilted back. We put saline in one of the nostrils and inhale quickly and deeply, while we press the opposite nostril. We repeat the opposite. Next, we cough and spit secretions.

2. Sound Technique:It is important to sound the correct way so that the emptying of the nasal passages takes place. If we press the two nostrils forcing the breath, we mobilize little nasal content and increase the intracranial pressure. The correct way is to press a nostril, leaving the opposite free; repeating the technique on both sides. In this way, the emptying is more complete.

3. Drainage of the nasal sinuses:Lying on your side, we press the nostril that stays up and we make quick nasal expirations; When we notice the decongestion, we clean with a paper and repeat on the other side.

4. Humidification:It is advisable before carrying out any type of descon decongestion technique , carrying out steam or inhalation of water vapor, alone or accompanied by balsamic agents (eg menthol).5.

Correct pattern of cough: It is important to differentiate between unproductive cough, which is the one that must be treated (antitussives) and productive cough, which is what helps us to expel mucus. To get a proper cough, we will take a deep breath (the larynx closes and the abdominal muscles contract), followed by a coughing blow that drags mucus from the trachea and bronchi. 6. Expiratory Flow Increase Technique:

Used when coughing we notice that the secretions are mobilized. We sit relaxed, taking a breath through the nose and let it go slowly through the mouth without pressing the lips (as if we were fogging in a mirror); we repeat about 40 times and try to cough correctly. We can repeat it several times, resting between the repetitions; while we continue noticing the secretions.Important: - Keep breathing through the nose andavoid breathing through the mouth

. Nasal breathing is the first defense mechanism, humidifies and heats the air.

- Maintain hydration.

- Sneeze without fearto make noise. The advisable thing is to keep the mouth open, duly protected by a handkerchief to avoid the possible contagions.

- Try to respect the recovery times that our body needs; Rest is very important. - In case the secretions persist; go to a Physiotherapist
